Summary ‘Parenting in a mixed culture’
This article was written in three periods, in 1992, then continued in 2000 and concluded in 2007. It narrates the process of parenting in a mixed culture - of parents coming from the Philippines with two daughters growing up in another cultural environment, the Netherlands.
The account gives a lot of insights, what it means to raise children in a different cultural environment than one’s original cultural environment. This article makes use of actual conversations between mother and daughters, extracting meaningful insights from these conversations. I hope that this article will be useful not only to migrant parents, but to all parents wanting to instil positive values to their children.
