The Acculturation of Overseas Filipinos

This is the thesis I made for my master’s degree in cross-cultural psychology. The study is about how overseas Filipinos (in this case, in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands) respond to a different culture or to culture change. The study shows that overseas Filipinos seem to be more concerned whether they should maintain their original culture or not; than whether they should incorporate the other culture or aspects of it or not.

Overseas Filipinos who have chosen to maintain one’s original culture seem to have a more positive approach and attitude towards the other culture. This acculturation strategy of integration seems to be the preferred strategy of most overseas Filipinos in the countries being studied. The study also shows that Filipino organizations seem to have a positive effect on the integration of overseas Filipinos. And as expected, mastery of the language of the host country play an important role in one’s integration in the host country.
